HKU student Bilal El Aoumari and HKU alumna Lotte Tabbers both won a Golden Calf! The most important film awards in the Netherlands were presented September 27 on the closing night of the Netherlands Film Festival in the Stadsschouwburg Utrecht.

Bilal El-Aoumari in Laura H.

HKU Theater student Bilal El Aoumari received a Golden Calf for his role in Laura H in the “Best Supporting Role Drama Series” category.

From the judge's report:

“The jury was very surprised by this young actor, who splashes off the screen with his performance - despite the fact that his role does not evoke obvious sympathy. It is an art to turn a bad guy into a person full of insecurities, frustrations and inabilities, especially when the character is based on an existing, controversial figure who has been much talked about. He convincingly brings him to life and makes the jury shudder with the erratic nature of his character. Bilal El-Aoumari brings danger and intensity to his role, but at the same time manages to evoke empathy by showing a perspective that is unknown or difficult for many to grasp.”

Lotte Tabbers with 'This is not a Christmas movie'
