Tom Haakman puts religion back on a pedestal

Tom Haakman

HKU alumnus Tom Haakman creates icons that put religion back at the forefront. The graduated product designer is making his way in becoming a successful sculpture artist with his own artistic practice. In this video portrait, we watch him as he sets up his exhibition at Unknown Gallery in Amsterdam-Noord.
Tom decided to make religion the main theme of his work because he sees religion is serving less and less as a cornerstone of society. In his view, religion is underexposed in the arts and he hopes that his work stimulates the audience to think about it. For Tom personally, despite his religious upbringing, the role of faith is also slowly disappearing from his life. This led him to his current quest as an artist to investigate the deterioration of religion in our society. His icons are an intriguing illustration of this.
