On the way

Sam Reekers

About the work

We all have to wait in public space sometimes. It might be a few minutes, or much longer. Sam Reekers became fascinated by this frequent activity, in which we are travelling yet not moving. In his detailed oil on panel paintings, he depicts the mind state that comes with having to wait. He portrays people as they are: bored, sleepy, or fully satisfied, without judging those he portrays or the act of waiting itself. Most of his paintings are based on photos he took at train stations. Together, they capture moments in life that are often overlooked.

While painting, Reekers works within a short time frame, mimicking the time frame that is associated with waiting. In this way, both subject and method are united. The size of his paintings invites the audience to stand closer, which causes looking at the waiting persons to feel unexpectedly intimate. From a distance, his paintings together create a waiting room; one of which you become a part for a while.
