If you have successfully completed a bachelor programme and taken the entrance exam for the Master of Music, but the admissions committee feels you need more preparation, then they may place you in the pre-master’s. It’s a stepping stone to the master’s programme you want to do.

What will you learn in this course?

During the pre-master’s we’ll prepare you for the Master of Music programme. After this year, you may take the entrance exam again.

The pre-master takes 24 weeks from September throgh March to complete. It consists of main-subject lessons, participating in ensembles, and projects. You can also take other classes in the Bachelor of Music programme through individually contracted tuition (contractonderwijs) to fill in gaps in your knowledge or skills. This academic year will improve your chances of being accepted to the Master of Music programme.

Application and admission

Something for you?

The pre-master’s is right for you if you:
  • want to continue studying and take the Master of Music programme;
  • have finished a professional music programme in the Netherlands, or have completed or will soon complete a comparable programme abroad.
The admission procedure for the pre-master’s is the same as for the Master of Music, so you must apply in any case for admission to the Master of Music. However, the committee may place you in the pre-master’s.

Important dates

All admissions for the academic year 2025-2026 will be scheduled from 31 March to 11 April 2025.

Prior education

You may take the pre-master’s if you’ve completed a Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Music in Education degree, or if you have taken a comparable programme outside the Netherlands.

Studielink

You can apply for the academic year 2025-2026 from 1 October 2024 to 1 February 2025.

Apply via Studielink for the Master of Music. The admission procedure for the pre-master is the same as for the Master of Music. You always apply for the Master of Music, but you can be admitted to the pre-master by the admission committee.
