Dr. Fabiola Camuti earned her doctorate in 2016 on the topic of meditation and performance in a programme shared by the Sapienza University of Rome and Amsterdam University. Her PhD thesis was about the necessity of closer interaction between the theoretical approach and the practice within the domain of performance studies and theatre pedagogics.
Camuti has formerly been a visiting researcher and practitioner in Italy, France, Denmark, England, the US and the Netherlands, and worked as researcher and lecturer at the departments of Theatre Sciences of Amsterdam University and Media & Culture at Utrecht University. Since 2019, she was senior researcher and associate lector within the Professorship Art Education As Critical Tactics at ArtEZ, where she focuses on the role of art and culture education in a changing and challenging world. Here she also conducted her post-doctoral research in art education, financed by a SIA-HBO grant. In this research about hierarchy inclusivity and decolonisation in education, she closely collaborated with various bachelor and master programmes. The Art in Education programmes were particularly relevant in this cooperation.
Camuti has managed projects about radical education experiments, such as Create Space, No School, and No University, and she developed multiple educative products and work methods that were based on an ecological perspective on learning, and on the interaction between research and education. She also works with participative and auto-ethnographic methodologies in projects about meaningfulness, art education and wellbeing. In this regard, she is also research coordinator of the SIA-RAAK PRO project called Art-Based Learning in Palliative Care.
Since 2022, Camuti is also programme leader of Research In Education for the sector KUO (the Art Education Sector) on behalf of the Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences. In this role, she is coordinating a national task group of experts from various art universities with the goal of strengthening the knowledge ecosystem and research culture within our academies.
