In 2025 starten bij HKU twee nieuwe onderzoeksprojecten: Stemmen voor veiligheid en CAR(E)TOGRAPHY: kunst en zorg in kaart.

Two new research projects for HKU in 2025

Both projects are a one-year explorative research track in which cultural and creative professionals will serve as ‘change makers’ to actively contribute to the tackling of social challenges and transitions.

Voices for safety

The project ‘Voices for Safety’ will address the persistent problems in youth care, that is struggling with a polarised and negative image in the public debate. The many diverse voices involved in the complications regarding youth care situations, do not always get heard. In this research, we will be exploring how art can amplify those voices and how the complexity can be visualised, by letting people tell their stories in their own way, without judgement or instantly jumping to solutions.

Stemmen voor Veiligheid is a project by, among others, HKU Theatre, the HKU professorship Grensverleggende Artistieke Praktijkijken (‘Pioneering Artistic Practices’), STUT Theatre and partners in the healthcare sector.

CAR(E)TOGRAPHY: A Map of Art and Healthcare

This second research project will literally chart the cooperation within the project Re-Creation at care home De Heygraeff. By doing so, it shows a detailed picture of the complex interaction between art and healthcare. To do this, an artistic mapping method is used. This not only provides a thorough understanding of the situation, but also opens up the research results for use by others working in similar practices. The maps that are created thus eventually function as means of documentation and navigation in the intersection between art and healthcare.

CAR(E)TOGRAPHY: kunst en zorg in kaart is a cooperation between the HKU professorship ‘Value(s)-based Entrepreneurship in and by the Arts, the course HKU Creative Transformation, artist duo Sjaak Langenberg & Rosé de Beer, and healthcare organisation Reinaerde.

Financing

The two projects are each subsidised with 40,000 euros from Taskforce for Applied Researc SIA: the organisation for promoting the quality and impact of practice-oriented research by universities of applied sciences. Both projects are so-called KIEM-MV project, which means that they are conducted with partners in the practical field and aimed at a social challenge. The ‘MV’ stands for Maatschappelijk Verdienvermogen (‘Social Earning Capacity’). The goal of KIEM-MV is to strengthen the knowledge base of changemakers from the broad professional field of designers, creators and changers.

The Art of Healthcare and Wellbeing

The theme of the new projects are linked to the HKU guiding light The Art of Healthcare and Wellbeing, which is one important maker of HKU’s activities. They also match with the SPRONG network Creating Cultures of Care: a partnership between various educationa institutions and organisations, in which HKU servers as project leader.
