Ten years after her graduation, Victoria Warmerdam, alumnus of HKU Media, has won the Oscar for Best Short Film for her ‘I’m Not A Robot’ yesterday. This makes her the first Dutch film director to ever win the award in this category. The film is about Lara, who discovers that she might be a robot after failing to pass a captcha test. In 20 minutes, the film addresses identity, feminism, and concerns about AI.

“Winning the Oscar means the world to me,” Victoria Warmerdam spoke in an interview. “Not since the 1960’s has a short film from the Netherlands been nominated for an Oscar. The nomination alone felt as an honour, so actually winning it feels surreal. It’s good for the Dutch film sector, with all the talented film makers we have in the Netherlands.”

Two other HKU alumni also contributed to the film: Kevin Kok (assistant director) and Sacha Gertsik (script advisor). HKU Media director Mir Wermuth and the AVM team congratulate Victoria Warmerdam with her Oscar.
