Mother Earth

A musical reflection about how we humans relate to Mother Earth

We people tend to think that we can achieve almost anything. That we control our destiny and can chase our dreams without trouble. But can we indeed? Perhaps we are more careless than we realize. We live in a world that is slowly being exhausted and polluted by us. We see climate change as the problem, but what if the real problem is actually us? We take from the world whatever we think we need. But do we ever consider what the world itself needs?

Artistic director Servaas Schreuders: ‘How can we make ourselves feel a part of Mother Earth? Sometimes this requires a bit of effort. The view from a mountain top is much more satisfying when you climb to the top by yourself than when you hitch a ride instead. You only experience how far a 20-kilometre distance is when you walk it. We often use tools to achieve our goals faster, but do the goals that we set for ourselves truly bring us where we want to be? Does comfort serve people, or does it actually impede us? These are the questions that have guided me while creating this performance.’

Mother Earth is, after the performance of Mozart’s requiem in November last year, the second large cooperation project between the students of Classical Music and the Music In Education courses. No less than 120 students are involved: a choir of 75 Music in Education students, students from the main modules Vocals and Choir Direction, and string and bass players from the Classical department. Together they present a concert that is dedicated to the world that surrounds us, perceived with an open mind. The location is the large concert hall of HKU Utrechts Conservatorium on Friday 2 February, with a second show in the Dom Church on Saturday 3 February.
