Entrance Examination

The entrance exam consists of three parts:

  • Click HERE to download the questionnaire. Fill in the questionnaire and save the document in a PDF file. Use file name: surname.questionnaire.pdf

    Deadline

    We kindly ask you to submit your questionnaire before the upload deadline mentioned in the email you received from us.

    Uploading

    You can upload the questionnaire via the UC upload tool. Look on this page under the heading 'Create account and upload questionnaire' for further instructions.

  • The theoretical exam will be online. Before 1 March 2025 you will receive an email with more information about the online theoretical exam.

    The theoretical exam consists of a number of questions about scales, transposition, triads and chord symbols. During the exam we test whether you understand the system behind musical notation and can handle it smoothly. For example, you should know the circle of fifths well, because many scales and chords come from it.

    During the practical exam we test your feeling for a melody note's place, knowledge of where the root tone is and if you can recognize a leading note. Your voice control is also important. You have to be able to sing melodies, separate an interval and the notes of a triad.

    Want to practice in advance? Then take the online level test: nivotest.hku.nl. This test covers all the topics you may encounter during your theoretical exam. After completing the test, you can immediately see the correct answers.

    Please note:
    • If you are currently following the Preparatory Course at HKU Utrechts Conservatorium, the theoretical examination will take place during the lessons. The teacher will inform you about this in due time.
    • If you have an exemption for the theoretical examination, you will receive a confirmation by e-mail before 1 March.

  • The practice admissions will take place between 31 March and 11 April 2025 on location in Utrecht. Click here to check the dates of the entrance exams per instrument.

    You will receive an e-mail no later than 15 March 2025 with more information about the practical entrance examination.

    Admission assignment practical entrance examination

    For the practical entrance exam, you need to prepare an assignment in advance. Below the different assignments per instrument.

Comments Admission

If you have not uploaded a questionnaire before the deadline, we will conclude that you do no longer want to partake in the admission and your entrance examination will end.

After uploading your document(s), you will receive a confirmation by email within three working days.

If you have applied for more instruments within one course, you will be given the option to upload your documents for the different instruments during the process.

No admission

If you want to cancel the entrance examination, you can withdraw your application request by Studielink.
