The Wolf, the Witch and the Hawthorn Tree

Anne van Brunschot en anderen

The Wolf, the witch and the hawthorn tree is a concert created by composer and artistic leader Anne van Brunschot (Helmond, 1998).

As a master student at HKU, she devoted much of her studying time to mastering a higher level of craftsmanship as a composer, and creating and cultivating a seamless blend between multiple disciplines and skills: from folk songs, to modern classical work, from fiddle-player, to conductor.

Refining the craft of composing is an ongoing journey for her, and being able to blend this craft into a concert where she also plays different roles, is one step along the long road to integrating her skills into a holistic artistic practice and vision.

Anne has never been someone who sticks to one genre, and this time won’t be any different. She played classical violin from a young age, and then rolled into rock bands and songwriting as a teen, before pursuing folk and celtic music throughout her studies. All these influences are proudly displayed and expressed in the works. She does not look for abstract or complex work: she seeks connection to the inner child, going back to her roots of pop music and musical aesthetics that speak to a wide audience, offering escapism and comfort.

This concert revolves around thematics which have been inspiring her from a very early age: nature, magic and stories.

In this concert you are invited to go outside. Sometimes it’s a fairytale forest, like the ones of Lewis and Tolkien, sometimes it’s the Irish hillsides, where the wee folk roam. Then again we travel to an ancient witch-burning pyre, or to an abandoned garden full of animals, or to the Veluwe, where we meet the wolf, and are given a choice.

We, the players and the composer, invite you to bring your inner child with you to this concert, because they will surely enjoy it
